3 Ways a Recycling Program Can Benefit Michigan Communities
If your community doesn’t offer a recycling program, it may be time to start a movement to introduce one. There are many great reasons to recycle, and they aren’t all environmental. Why should your Michigan community start a recycling program?
- Recycling Can Reduce the Cost of Landfill Dumping
Putting garbage in a landfill isn’t free. As space demands go up, so does the cost of shipping refuse to dumping sites. The bigger the load, the more it will cost the community. If every household and business in the neighborhood worked on cutting down on waste, it could have a widespread impact on the cost of this service. Recycling is a good way to reduce the amount of garbage you send to the landfill.
- Recycling Can Turn into Profit by Selling Materials
Many people throw materials away that could be sold and turned into profit for the community. Some recyclable materials have value because they can be used to manufacture items for less than it would cost to process virgin material.
- Recycling Creates Local Jobs in the Green Industry
Strengthen your local green industry with more jobs. A new recycling program or expanding an existing program will mean more work for residents. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency, there are 10.3 million green industry jobs around the world. That’s an increase of 5.3% from 2017. More jobs mean fewer unemployed people and more wealth for your community.

Cardboard Recycling Solutions
If cardboard is recycled properly, we can save trees and reduce the use of landfill space.
On Earth Day, it is important to note how we can do a better job in our recycling endeavors. Many of us think we are doing our part to help the environment but there are important details that many do not follow that thwart these endeavors. Earth Day is a perfect time to educate the public on what we need to do differently to get the most out of our recycling efforts.
Cardboard is a no-brainer as a recycling choice to help the environment. Over half of cardboard collected is used to make new cardboard boxes with others used for cereal boxes, shoeboxes and the like.
In order to use cardboard for recycling, there are a few simple steps that need to be followed:
- remove shipping materials such as bubble wrap and packing peanuts
- take out any plastic bags
- do not put boxes that have food, grease or oils in them such as pizza boxes
Why Are Pizza Boxes Problematic?
Pizza boxes are one of the largest contaminators of cardboard recycling. Although, many pizza boxes are made from recycled cardboard themselves, they cannot be recycled again if there is food, oil or grease in the box. If you want to place your pizza box in your cardboard recycle bin, you must cut away all soiled portions of the box first.
Priority Waste offers commercial customers’ cardboard only recycling. Commercial Recycling Containers are available in the following sizes: 6 cubic yard dumpster or 8 cubic yard dumpster. Contact us to learn more or to reserve your container.

Wintertime Tips When Using A Dumpster
The winter weather can pose risks here in Michigan when working outside in the elements. Please make sure you are safe and adhere to precautions during inclement weather.
Wintertime Tips When Using A Dumpster
- Make sure pathways are clear of ice and snow so you have an unobstructed route to the dumpster to minimize risks of slips and falls.
- Dress properly for the weather conditions. Exposure to below freezing temperatures for a period of time can cause frostbite.
- Use work gloves when handling metal in icy weather. Not only is it slippery and hard to grip if icy but can burn your skin.
- As with shoveling, always lift properly and make sure that you are in heart healthy condition when moving heavy items.
Priority Waste hopes these wintertime safety measures help you while using dumpsters. Contact us today for a quote or to reserve your dumpster.
Happy Holidays from Priority Waste
Tis the Season
The Time Before Dumpsters: One Invention That Cleaned Up America
There was a time when we didn’t have dumpsters and garbage collection. Trash was once tossed anywhere. It’s easy to see how this became a problem, especially in communities with a fast-growing population.
Sanitation departments were formed to help clear the streets. It was a big first step, but one that was not efficient. Picking up all that trash was not easy and required the work of horse-drawn carts and several men. Eventually, the Ford Model T was introduced and could be used to replace the horses. Even with this advancement, it was an arduous task.
Enter Inventor George Roby Dempster, Mayor of Knoxville
George Roby Dempster, who once served as the mayor of Knoxville, Tennessee, owned a construction business. This gave him first-hand experience with the challenges of hauling waste. He applied his understanding of machinery to create a more efficient solution for this common problem.
The Dempster Dumpster was introduced in 1935. This was the first large-scale container used to remove waste. It was designed to be mechanically emptied into a truck, reducing the amount of manpower required to pick up garbage.
Companies from around the world wanted a dumpster for their operation. As demand increased, Dempster’s company invested all of its resources into production. They later expanded their offerings to include the Dempster-Balester which could crush and bale automobiles. The first front-loading garbage truck was added to the company’s product line by the 1950s.
Today, we all benefit from the innovation of Dempster and his company. Find out more about Michigan dumpster containerss and waste/recycling management systems by contacting Priority Waste.
New Technology Is Changing the Way Dumpsters Are Emptied
Trash collection isn’t a new concept. The first garbage truck appeared over 80 years ago. It seems pretty straightforward. Garbage is collected in a container, and someone comes along and carries it away. A Finnish tech company is improving that process with the help of modern technology.
Enevo Introduces Dumpster Sensors That Detect Fill Levels
Enevo, a company headquartered in Espoo, Finland, developed a sensor that can be attached to traditional dumpsters. The device monitors fill levels inside the dumpster. This information lets companies know when the trash needs collected. It also verifies when refuse has been picked up.
CEO Fredrik Kekalainen used to own a company that developed mobile phone software. Today, he’s applying his knowledge and skills to the waste and recycling industry.
A Better Way to Monitor and Handle Our Trash
Kekalainen reported that it is common to empty dumpsters that are not full. In fact, many are only 30% to 60% full when the garbage truck comes by to empty them. Using Enevo’s sensors, many cities can cut down on the number of miles driven by garbage trucks and the number of trucks needed to manage refuse.
The sensors were able to halve the number of trucks needed in Antwerp, Belgium. Rotterdam also implemented Enevo’s technology and was able to reduce their trash collection days by 20%. This technology can have a positive financial and environmental effect with less fuel consumption and fewer vehicles needed in communities.
The sensors can also monitor and record the amount of trash that is thrown out. Just as customers can see how much electricity or water they have consumed, they can also see how much trash they throw away and make changes to reduce it. Contact Priority Waste to learn more about garbage collection, dumpster containers and recycling programs that are currently available in Michigan.
How to Choose the Right Waste Removal Company for Construction Jobs
Construction jobs can produce a lot of waste. If you’re a contractor, then you are responsible for making sure that the project goes smoothly. That means you must remove obstacles that can slow progress down, like built-up demolition debris and construction refuse. You need a good waste removal company to clear the way so that you can finish work on time and within budget.
Look for Waste Removal Companies with Experience
Companies who have been in the business for a while are more likely to be reliable. Expert workers will help you make good decisions about the waste removal part of any construction project. Priority Waste’s staff brings a combined 75+ years of experience to every job.
Check Available Dumpster Rental Sizes
Some jobs are more demanding than others. Make sure the waste removal company you choose offers multiple dumpster sizes. Why pay for a higher capacity when you don’t really need it? On the other hand, you need a waste service that can handle high capacity loads for new construction or more intensive projects. Priority Waste offers 10, 20, 30, and 40 yard dumpsters that range in capacity from 2 to 8 tons each.
Find an Environmentally-Friendly Refuse Removal Company
Removing debris is only part of the job. You need a company that understands how to operate with the environment in mind. Not only is this good for the planet, but also ensures that you won’t break any natural resource laws. Contact Priority Waste today to discuss your options for construction waste removal and recycling.
7 Good Reasons to Recycle with Priority Waste
Everyone should consider recycling. There are many good reasons that benefit all of us. Why should you consider letting Priority Waste provide recycling services for your home or business?
- Recycling Reduces Waste – The main reason most people recycle is to reduce their waste output. Less waste sitting around is better for the environment and our communities.
- Recycling Reduces Energy Consumption – Recycling helps reduce energy consumption because products can be made without starting over using new materials. For example, recycled aluminum cans require 95% less energy to produce.
- Recycling Reduces Water Pollution – Clean waterways should be a priority. Recycling helps keep refuse out of our water supply.
- Recycling Is Good for Businesses – Recycling helps boost the economy because it provides another way to produce the materials needed to manufacture new products.
- Recycling Protects Wildlife – Debris left in the environment is dangerous for animals. Recycling helps protect wildlife by reducing discarded trash that otherwise would be dumped in or near habitats.
- Recycling Slows Landfill Use – By producing less waste, we are also slowing the rate of expansion at landfills. That means more land is left clean and untouched.
- Recycling Creates Jobs – Recycling creates new jobs. It is currently an industry that produces over $230 annually in the United States. Recycling and reuse companies employ over 1 million workers across the country.
Are you ready to start recycling? Contact Priority Waste today to discuss available services and find out how you can lower your impact on the environment while helping local economies.
5 Ways to Fill Your Dumpster Efficiently
The amount of debris and refuse you can fit in your dumpster will rely heavily on how you fill it. While most waste removal companies will provide an estimated capacity for each container, this will mean less if you do not fully utilize the interior space. The following tips will help you fill your dumpster efficiently so that you can take advantage of its maximum capacity.
- Break Down Items As Much As You Can
Break down anything you can. Make sure items are in their smallest, most compact form before placing in the dumpster. This will ensure optimum space usage and reduce the chances of hidden gaps that will cost you capacity.
- Place Flimsy Materials at the Bottom
If you are throwing away flimsy materials like foam, fabric, or cardboard, use these to line the bottom. These objects will compress as more weight is added on top, which means they will take up even less space. Foam sheets and cardboard can be crushed, so it makes minimal difference in height when stacking refuse.
- Fill Bulkier Objects First
Next, you can add bulkier objects. These need the most room, so they should be placed first. Arrange contents so that everything is as close together as possible. Anything with flat sides or objects that can fit inside others should be placed accordingly.
- Use Smaller Debris to Fill in Gaps
Some larger objects are oddly shaped, which means there may be pockets of open space created. Find smaller debris to fill in these areas. Once filed, you can start adding to any open spaces surrounding bulky objects or along the walls of your dumpster. Try to fill in as much as you can horizontally before building up.
- Monitor Progress and Watch for Openings
Make a point to stop and check progress every now and again. This will provide you an opportunity to look for any open gaps you may have missed or spots that could be better arranged. By methodically adding more and more refuse, you can fill your dumpster to its maximum capacity.
