Most everyday objects can be taken out with your weekly trash. This is smaller debris that fits easily inside a standard garbage bag. Occasionally, you may need to throw away something larger. These items require a special request to ensure that they are collected and removed promptly.
What Is Considered Bulk Garbage?
Anything too large or heavy to go out with the regular trash is considered bulk. The most common types of bulk objects include furniture, mattresses, and appliances. These are bigger things found in most households that occasionally need to be replaced.
If you are not sure about whether your item would require bulk pickup, contact your waste management company. They can verify whether you will need to make a bulk request.
What Items Require Special Handling?
Some objects contain potentially hazardous materials and may require special handling or recycling. Air conditioners, freezers, and refrigerators fall into this category. These appliances contain refrigerant and other substances that may need to be removed, so they don’t end up in the natural environment. Talk to your waste collector to determine the best way to get rid of any bulk items that requires special handling.
How Do I Request Bulk Pickup Service?
If you are a Priority Waste customer, let us know what you have, and we’ll suggest the best, most economical removal options. We are here to aid you in keeping your property and your community clean and safe for everyone.

Removing yard waste is one of the challenges that many homeowners face. At some point, you will most likely need to deal with downed branches, old sod, dead plants, or other vegetation-related debris. Before you begin landscaping, make sure you have a plan ready to clear away refuse. What can you do to get rid of yard waste?
Break It Down and Use It
Some materials can be broken down and used in your garden. For example, if you get a woodchipper, then you can turn branches and shrubs into mulch. This can be used to grow more plants. Always follow recommended guidelines and safety precautions when using machinery like a woodchipper. If you aren’t confident, then it may be best to have the yard waste removed instead.
Take It to the Local Dump
You can take it all to your local dump. You will have to load and drive it there yourself. That may not be an issue if you have a sturdy truck that you don’t mind getting dirty. If you don’t, then this may not be an option. You could get a truck, but that will increase the cost of the project and add time to pick up and return the dumpster.
Contact Priority Waste for Pickup
The safest and most convenient solution is to let a waste management company handle the job. If you are in one of our municipalities or condominium associations or your business uses our services, Priority Waste can come to your location and collect landscaping refuse. Let us know what yard waste you have, and we’ll provide an estimate for pickup.
Priority Waste will begin trash hauling services to New Baltimore beginning September 1st. “We’re ready to hit the ground running. The only way that Priority will be successful is if we can go to other municipalities and say … we made their transition seamless.” ….and that’s what we will do! If your municipality is looking for waste management services, please contact Priority Waste. We also provide curbside waste pickup to condominium associations. We are here to help keep your city clean!

If your community doesn’t offer a recycling program, it may be time to start a movement to introduce one. There are many great reasons to recycle, and they aren’t all environmental. Why should your Michigan community start a recycling program?
- Recycling Can Reduce the Cost of Landfill Dumping
Putting garbage in a landfill isn’t free. As space demands go up, so does the cost of shipping refuse to dumping sites. The bigger the load, the more it will cost the community. If every household and business in the neighborhood worked on cutting down on waste, it could have a widespread impact on the cost of this service. Recycling is a good way to reduce the amount of garbage you send to the landfill.
- Recycling Can Turn into Profit by Selling Materials
Many people throw materials away that could be sold and turned into profit for the community. Some recyclable materials have value because they can be used to manufacture items for less than it would cost to process virgin material.
- Recycling Creates Local Jobs in the Green Industry
Strengthen your local green industry with more jobs. A new recycling program or expanding an existing program will mean more work for residents. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency, there are 10.3 million green industry jobs around the world. That’s an increase of 5.3% from 2017. More jobs mean fewer unemployed people and more wealth for your community.

Many jobs require dumpsters to gather and haul away debris. Even a small renovation can produce a large quantity of waste. The key is finding a company that offers dumpster delivery and pickup at affordable rates with flexibility.
Things Don’t Always Go Right
In a perfect world, every construction job would go smoothly and stay within budget and schedule. Unfortunately, this isn’t a perfect world, and sometimes things go awry. Whether you are a contractor or DIYer, you need to know that the services and equipment you use will be available to accommodate you.
Choose a waste management company that will work with you and adapt to your needs. Priority Waste is available to offer dumpster delivery when you want it. We even provide same-day service. Let us know what you’re doing, and we’ll make sure your dumpster is there to keep the worksite clean and safe.
Dumpsters Are Not One-Size-Fits-All
No two jobs are the same, which is why you should have options when choosing your dumpster. Capacity is essential to the effectiveness of the dumpster you use. If it is too small, then you’ll have to pay for another dumpster. If it is too big, then you could be paying more than you should and whittling away at your project budget.
Priority Waste offers four dumpster sizes, ranging from 10 yards with a 2 ton capacity up to 40 yards with an 8 ton capacity. Obtain a container that meets your needs without paying more than you should.
What if You Need More Than a Dumpster?
It’s far more convenient to have one go-to source for all your waste and recycling needs. Priority Waste does it all, from dumpster containers to recycling programs and residential cleanup. Call us now to learn more about how our services can help you.
Thanks to the generosity of Utica Community Schools residents as well as local government and businesses, students in the community will be receiving coats to fight off the winter cold.
As a result of the nearly two-month long “Coats for Kids” community drive for Utica Community Schools students, 1,383 new coats and more than $6,000 in monetary donations were collected.
The drive was sponsored by the district, Shelby Township, the cities of Sterling Heights and Utica and through local business Antolin Shelby, Shelby Township’s largest employer.
“Great partnerships produce great results,” Superintendent Christine Johns said. “Teachers, administrators, parents and community leaders are modeling for students what is great about our school district and the communities we call home. Service and volunteerism are the very essence of our community.”
The successful community coat drive began to take shape when Antolin Shelby opened its new, state-of-the-art 360,000 square-foot automotive international manufacturing facility.
Antolin Shelby General Manager and Utica Community Schools graduate Joe McCluskey II initiated the idea of a community coat drive as part of the business opening.
“This community is like a family, and I am honored to live in Shelby Township where families join together to help one another,” McCluskey said. “I am especially proud of the Antolin Shelby employees who rose to the challenge to donate coats, hats and gloves and also helped with the coat collections, sorting and packing for distribution.”
Working with Shelby Township Supervisor Richard Stathakis, the Coats for Kids drive expanded into the cities of Utica and Sterling Heights and featured more than 10 drop sites throughout the community.
The drive was held from mid-November through Jan. 4. [Read more…] about Priority Waste Is Proud to Help Out the Community with Coats for Kids
Customers throughout Southeast Michigan are often uncertain about dumpster placement. They want to minimize the impact of a heavy container sitting on their property. There are several factors to consider before choosing a safe place for your dumpster.
Can I Put a Dumpster On the Street?
Streets are made of solid material and usually level enough to place a heavy container on. However, there may be traffic safety rules and local regulations that you have to abide by when using a public space. Contact your local code enforcer to learn more about obtaining a permit for a dumpster.
Can I Put a Dumpster In My Yard?
If your yard is level without excess mud or moisture, you may be able to place the dumpster here. The problem is that the size and weight of the dumpster will suffocate grass and likely ruin any landscaping under it. It may also leave ruts behind. A gravel, asphalt, or concrete surface works better.
Can I Put a Dumpster On My Driveway?
Your driveway is usually the best spot for your dumpster. If you are getting during the hot season and you have asphalt, try to place the dumpster in a shady spot to minimize impressions. Always have it delivered on the most level part of your driveway.
Delivering Your Dumpster
If you are uncertain about the best place for your dumpster, contact us. We can discuss your options and recommend the best area for maximum safety and functionality. Remember to always check with your local code enforcer in case there are ordinances related to dumpster storage and use. Give Priority Waste a call to get started and schedule and reserve your dumpster.
Dumpster divers can range from a minor nuisance to a serious threat. Some are scavengers looking for anything they can use or sell. Others are more concerning. They will sift through garbage to find documents with any sensitive information on them that can be used for identity theft. It’s best to deter all dumpster divers as much as possible to protect your business.
Keep Your Dumpsters Well-Lit to Discourage Diving
Good lighting will make some dumpster divers think twice. Have powerful outdoor lights installed above or around the dumpsters. These should be placed high up on a building or pole so that they are out of reach and difficult to damage or block.
Install Motion-Sensing Cameras Focused on Dumpsters
Install motion-sensing cameras focused on your dumpsters to watch for intruders. Cameras are much more affordable to buy these days and easy to install. Just like the lights, make sure yours are out of reach so that they cannot be tampered with or easily blocked.
Destroy All Documents That Contain Personal or Business Information
Make sure there’s nothing that identity thieves want in your dumpsters. Destroy all documents with any personal or business information. It’s best to err on the side of caution and do this with all documents that you no longer need.
Hire a Remote Monitoring Service to Watch Your Dumpsters
Some companies offer remote monitoring security services. These utilize a camera with a person remotely observing activity. They can call you or the authorities if they see dumpster divers on your property.
Lock Up and Fence in Your Dumpsters
You can lock dumpsters or build a fence with a locked gate around them. This isn’t foolproof but will make it more difficult for dumpster divers to access the dumpster. For more information on dumpster protection and safety, contact Priority Waste.
There was a time when we didn’t have dumpsters and garbage collection. Trash was once tossed anywhere. It’s easy to see how this became a problem, especially in communities with a fast-growing population.
Sanitation departments were formed to help clear the streets. It was a big first step, but one that was not efficient. Picking up all that trash was not easy and required the work of horse-drawn carts and several men. Eventually, the Ford Model T was introduced and could be used to replace the horses. Even with this advancement, it was an arduous task.
Enter Inventor George Roby Dempster, Mayor of Knoxville
George Roby Dempster, who once served as the mayor of Knoxville, Tennessee, owned a construction business. This gave him first-hand experience with the challenges of hauling waste. He applied his understanding of machinery to create a more efficient solution for this common problem.
The Dempster Dumpster was introduced in 1935. This was the first large-scale container used to remove waste. It was designed to be mechanically emptied into a truck, reducing the amount of manpower required to pick up garbage.
Companies from around the world wanted a dumpster for their operation. As demand increased, Dempster’s company invested all of its resources into production. They later expanded their offerings to include the Dempster-Balester which could crush and bale automobiles. The first front-loading garbage truck was added to the company’s product line by the 1950s.
The way you load a dumpster will affect how much refuse you can put inside it. With a little planning and information, you can load like a professional. Get the best value out of your dumpster containers by using the methods outlined below.
Plan Your Load before the Dumpster Arrives
Make sure you know what can and cannot go into the dumpster. Some items may require special recycling or disposal. The rules will vary from one city to the next, so check with your local waste authority to learn more.
Start with the Big Stuff at the Bottom
Big, bulky items should go in first. These will fill the bottom of the dumpster and serve as a solid foundation for smaller items that sit on top. Make sure you have enough people on hand to lift heavy objects without injury.
Fill in the Gaps with Small Garbage
Pack as much smaller debris into the gaps between your bulky refuse. This will maximize your space usage and help hold everything in place. You may be surprised at how much you can pack in the small open spaces.
Get Creative but Do So Safely
Getting creative is great if it means you get more into your dumpster. Just do so safely. Do not place objects in that are not balanced. Also, never overfill a dumpster. Some places have rules that prohibit moving dumpsters that have objects sticking out over the top or sides of the dumpster. If you have questions about loading, contact Priority Waste. We can help our customers get the most out of their dumpster containers!
Dumpster containers are an easy way to get rid of larger items that you no longer want. While most household and construction debris are permitted, there are some items that are not. Follow the rules, so that you don’t end up with a fine from your local sanitation department.
Things That You Can Throw in a Dumpster
The good news is that there are many things that can be thrown in a dumpster. If you are working on a building project or renovation, then the following can be discarded this way:
If you are getting a dumpster for household purposes, then you can also discard the following items:
- Yard waste
- Storm debris
- Aerosol cans
Things That You Cannot Throw in a Dumpster
Objects and substances that can be harmful or hazardous to the environment cannot be put in a dumpster. The restricted list includes:
- Air conditioners
- Food waste
- Oil & fuel
- Propane tanks
- Railroad ties
- Car batteries
- Household cleaners
Most waste removal services will also include anything that could potentially damage the dumpster itself. If you aren’t sure about an object, make sure you ask before putting it in the dumpster.
Know the Rules About Dumpster Rentals
Some areas may have variations in their permitted and restricted lists. Make sure you know the rules about dumpster containerss in your area by talking to a professional. Priority Waste is available to help Michigan customers learn more about what they can put in their dumpsters. Contact us today!
Everyone should consider recycling. There are many good reasons that benefit all of us. Why should you consider letting Priority Waste provide recycling services for your home or business?
- Recycling Reduces Waste – The main reason most people recycle is to reduce their waste output. Less waste sitting around is better for the environment and our communities.
- Recycling Reduces Energy Consumption – Recycling helps reduce energy consumption because products can be made without starting over using new materials. For example, recycled aluminum cans require 95% less energy to produce.
- Recycling Reduces Water Pollution – Clean waterways should be a priority. Recycling helps keep refuse out of our water supply.
- Recycling Is Good for Businesses – Recycling helps boost the economy because it provides another way to produce the materials needed to manufacture new products.
- Recycling Protects Wildlife – Debris left in the environment is dangerous for animals. Recycling helps protect wildlife by reducing discarded trash that otherwise would be dumped in or near habitats.
- Recycling Slows Landfill Use – By producing less waste, we are also slowing the rate of expansion at landfills. That means more land is left clean and untouched.
- Recycling Creates Jobs – Recycling creates new jobs. It is currently an industry that produces over $230 annually in the United States. Recycling and reuse companies employ over 1 million workers across the country.
Are you ready to start recycling? Contact Priority Waste today to discuss available services and find out how you can lower your impact on the environment while helping local economies.
The amount of debris and refuse you can fit in your dumpster will rely heavily on how you fill it. While most waste removal companies will provide an estimated capacity for each container, this will mean less if you do not fully utilize the interior space. The following tips will help you fill your dumpster efficiently so that you can take advantage of its maximum capacity.
- Break Down Items As Much As You Can
Break down anything you can. Make sure items are in their smallest, most compact form before placing in the dumpster. This will ensure optimum space usage and reduce the chances of hidden gaps that will cost you capacity.
- Place Flimsy Materials at the Bottom
If you are throwing away flimsy materials like foam, fabric, or cardboard, use these to line the bottom. These objects will compress as more weight is added on top, which means they will take up even less space. Foam sheets and cardboard can be crushed, so it makes minimal difference in height when stacking refuse.
- Fill Bulkier Objects First
Next, you can add bulkier objects. These need the most room, so they should be placed first. Arrange contents so that everything is as close together as possible. Anything with flat sides or objects that can fit inside others should be placed accordingly.
- Use Smaller Debris to Fill in Gaps
Some larger objects are oddly shaped, which means there may be pockets of open space created. Find smaller debris to fill in these areas. Once filed, you can start adding to any open spaces surrounding bulky objects or along the walls of your dumpster. Try to fill in as much as you can horizontally before building up.
- Monitor Progress and Watch for Openings
Make a point to stop and check progress every now and again. This will provide you an opportunity to look for any open gaps you may have missed or spots that could be better arranged. By methodically adding more and more refuse, you can fill your dumpster to its maximum capacity.
